It is impossible not to walk in the wonderful Cycladic alleys of the city with the wonderful mansions, not to take a walk in the wonderful port that reaches Vaporia. Visit the historic square "Miaouli" with the statue of Miaouli, as well as the magnificent and huge City Hall (designed by the famous architect Ernst Ziller who created the building of the Greek Parliament), and the historic Apollo Theater.
Walking through the whitewashed alleys of this medieval settlement with the typical defensive layout of the houses around the (fortified) Cathedral of San George, you will admire the traditional whitewashed houses, the arches over the road and the narrow cobbled streets. Climb the countless stairs to the top of the hill, the view is magnificent.
Its characteristic blue dome stands out in the Vaporia district, showing you the way. The exterior with the colonnades and the marble iconostasis made of Pentelic marble, with Italian marble inserts, made by the Tinian sculptor Georgios Vitalis are just some of the elements that will win your attention.
The Town Hall
The impressive town hall building in Miouli Square is the work of the architect Ernest Ziller and is the trademark of the city. It is worth visiting the meeting room of the municipal council to see the full body oil paintings of George I and Queen Olga, works by Spyros Prosalentis. In the building you will find a small archeological museum.
The Municipal Theater of Apollo
Built according to Italian standards, the building is reminiscent of La Scala in Milan. Some of the biggest names in Greek theater, such as Marina Kotopouli and Manos Katrakis, have passed through his stage. Today it hosts the summer Aegean Festivals (July 12 - 21 and Classical Music (August 16 - 24), with a small museum with old posters, programs, manuscripts and photographic material.
Halva pies and Turkish delights
Do not leave the island without having tried the famous sweets, which are the halva pies and the famous Turkish delights. You will find them in all the confectioneries of the island, Chiou street is the pre-eminent street for the necessary supplies, and it is the ideal gift for your loved ones at home.
The island is perfect for water activities, as it has many wonderful beaches: Vari, Finikas, Galissas, Kini and the pine-covered Poseidonia (or Delagratsia) with its neoclassical villas and ornate gardens are just some of the paradise .
